Voluntary Contributions: Many thanks to all who have contributed so far this year. It is much appreciated. There has been a phenomenal increase in parents paying online. This has made the administration so much easier for Ms Weafer (& no more lost envelopes at the bottom of school bags!)
Thanks to all.

Bag Packing – In Super Valu with the boys in Rang 5 & 6 on March 10th & 11th. Please support.

Charity Swim – On Thursday the 22nd of February Rang 6 did a charity swim in Castle Park to raise funds and awareness for the Irish Cancer Society. 18 boys took part. They left at 12:40 and started walking to Castle Park accompanied by parents, Orlagh Webb and Susannagh Grogan and staff Bríd Mossop and Patricia O’Neill. They got dressed and then went out to the pool. They got sorted into groups of four or five. They had a timer set. They had four people to count the laps and make sure they were completing their lengths. Most people took breaks every once in a while to get their breath back. In the end they managed to swim 651, over 16km lengths with a class average of 36 lengths per boy. So far they have raised €500, but the money is still coming in. We look forward to seeing what the total is! We were all very proud of Harold Boys’ efforts, especially as it is for such a good cause

Green Schools News – Our Green Schools committee will be participating in the launch of the National Spring Clean in Dalkey on Wednesday 21st March, 10am with a number of other local schools and coordinated by the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. Dalkey Tidy Towns have also agreed to participate and we would like to thank them for their involvement. This march will start at Cuala GAA and finish at Harold Boys’ N.S.

The launch will focus on three themes 1) Litter (especially the effects on our seas), 2) Dog waste (a significant problem in Dalkey) and 3) National Spring Clean. We hope this march will help highlight these issues in the community and help us minimise pollution in Dalkey and the surrounding areas.

Remember to check out our Green Schools blog at http://hbnsgreenschools.weebly.com/ where you will find more news and pictures about the Green Schools activities within the school.

Thanks to everyone for co-operating with the Set down Area. However, there have been complaints from our neighbours on St. Patrick’s Road and these have been passed on to the Gardaí. Please remember:-
• Not to park across driveways
• Not to park on double yellow lines. (This restricts visibility for drivers trying to exit their driveways)
Kindly ensure that you pass this message onto minders, au pairs or anyone else collecting your son at 2.30 pm

School Policies – The following policies were ratified at the latest Board of Management meeting: Child Safeguarding Statement, I.C.T and Healthy Eating.

Technology – We believe coding is an essential skill. Learning to code teaches you how to solve problems and work together in creative ways. And it helps you build apps that bring your ideas to life. We think everyone should have the opportunity to create something that can change the world.

NEWSLETTER – February 2018

Voluntary Contributions: Many thanks to all who have contributed so far this year. Payments are welcome at any time.

Child Protection: As instructed by the DES, Harold Boys’ N.S. will close for two half-days to allow staff to engage with New Child Protection procedures & to access training. For this reason, school will finish at 12.30 pm on Feb 6th.

Statement of Strategy for School Attendance: This policy was ratified by the Board of Management at the January meeting. Please note
• Parents have a legal duty to ensure their son is at school on every day that the school is open unless there is a genuine reason for him not to attend.
• A written explanation of absence must be sent to the class teacher.
• The school cannot give ‘permission’ for holiday absences during term time. Harold Boys’ N.S. strongly discourages parents from taking boys on holidays during term time.

Preparations for Sacraments: Congratulations to Rang 2 who received the Sacrament of Penance on 22nd January. Thanks to the boys from Rang 3-6 for singing in the school choir. This support is much appreciated. Rang 6 are preparing for their Confirmation which will take place on 8th March. The Ceremony of Light for Confirmation will take place on 21st February at 7.30 pm.

Harold Boys’ Quiz Team
Well done to our junior and senior quiz teams who took part in the Credit Union Quiz in St Laurence College, Loughlinstown on Monday 29th January. Both teams performed very well in a challenging competition but unfortunately did not make the next round. The teams were:

Senior Team: Stephen O’ Neill (captain), Ciarán Myers, Ronan Prior and Milo Quinn

Dean was impressed with how well our Green Schools committee had done on this flag and the improvements we have made to the school grounds.
Our Green Schools blog has more information and pictures of activities around the school which fit our Green School themes so check it out at http://hbnsgreenschools.weebly.com/. We also have a section for our Action Plan, which we encourage you to have a read of to see what further improvements, actions and activities the committee have planned for the school!

Science Open Evening: On 30st January, we put on a Science Exhibition as part of our project for the Award of Science & Maths Excellence. This is our 12th time entering the awards!
