Green Schools News This month we continued our work on the biodiversity theme as all classes planted Irish tomatoes with Aoife from Windy Ridge Garden Centre. We learned about how to care for these plants and got to take them home. We searched the school gardens and bug hotel for different types of insects too. We also participated in the National Spring Clean with each class assigned to different areas of Dalkey. Many passers-by stopped to praise the efforts of our school which shows the impact this project has on the community. Next month, we will participate in another national campaign: National Walk to School Week. We would love to see all classes make a big effort to walk to school or park and stride for the week beginning Monday 15th May as walking to school has so many benefits for the environment and for our own health and wellbeing.

Speech & Drama Exams: The Irish Board of Speech & Drama examiner complimented all pupils on the high standard this year. Congratulation to medal winners Gavin Pantony, Ross Byrne & Conor Brodrick. Well done to Kevin Roche, Colm Heylin, Turloch Egan Manson, Niccolo Mc Namara, Ben Kelly, Antoin Siejko, Dylan Owens, Donal Moylan, Conor Westbrook, Tom Hogan, Daniel Doyle, Milo Quinn, Rory O’Mahony, and Jack O’Doherty who all received Distinction.

Green Schools: We had Linda and TJ from the WSPCA in to talk to us about their work at Sharpeshill Animal Sanctuary. We heard about some of the abandoned or poorly cared for animals who had been taken in by the sanctuary and brought back to full health. TJ brought in Jinx, a dog who had been abandoned but who TJ now looks after and is really happy. We’d like to thank TJ, Linda and Jinx for their visit! We also attended Environment the Musical at the Lexicon Theatre, Dún Laoghaire. The musical told the story of Millview Park and its litter problem. It highlighted a lot of what we learned during our work on the Litter and Waste theme and the performances by Monkstown Park Junior School and Rathmichael Primary Schools were excellent.

NEWSLETTER – March 2017

Voluntary Contributions: Many thanks to all who have contributed so far this year. It is much appreciated. There has been a phenomenal increase in parents paying online. This has made the administration so much easier for Ms Weafer (& no more lost envelopes at the bottom of school bags!)
Thanks to all.

News from the Parents’ Association: There will be a fundraising family Bingo Night on Friday 24th March in Cuala Hall, Hyde Road, Dalkey. A great night’s fun for the boys, their families and friends.

Bag Packing: In SuperValu with the boys in Rang 5 & 6 on 11th & 12th March Please support.

Charity Swim: This year Rang 6 chose the Temple Street Children’s University Hospital as their charity for the Annual Charity Swim. They swam a total of 22.5 Km! (the average number of lengths per pupil was an amazing 47 lengths) and are hoping to raise about €1000. Well done boys!

Sports News: The after school GAA training is going well with Barry Burke on Wednesday afternoons with a very high attendance each week. Both teams played a friendly match on Wednesday 15th February against Johnstown in Thomastown pitches. One team with Euan Webb as the captain won their match 7-5 to 3-0 and the other team captained by James White as captain lost by 7 points.

Green Schools News: As part of our work towards the Biodiversity flag, Fourth Class brought in a huge range of materials from home and built a bug hotel, which can be seen in the front garden of our school. There are lots of different materials and spaces for the bugs to climb around and shelter in. Bugs are an important part of the eco-system and this shelter will be helpful in encouraging more beneficial insects into our garden and contribute to the conservation of insects under threat such as bumblebees and solitary bees. It also helps the biodiversity of our school garden by giving a home to pollinators and pest-controllers.

Thanks to everyone for co-operating with the Set Down Area. However, there have been complaints from our neighbours on St. Patrick’s Road and these have been passed on to the Gardaí. Please remember:-
• Not to park across driveways
• Not to park on double yellow lines. (This restricts visibility for drivers trying to exit their driveways)
Kindly ensure that you pass this message onto minders, au pairs or anyone else collecting your son at 2.30 pm

NEWSLETTER – February 2017

Voluntary Contributions: Many thanks to all who have contributed so far this year. Payments are welcome at any time.

Internet Safety Talk For Parents:
The overall objective of this Internet Safety session is to provide parents with information and skills so that they will be able to engage in their children’s online lives.
Parents often admire how easily their children can use the internet – but aren’t quite sure of what they are doing or seeing. This session will look at how children use the internet. Parents will be introduced to strategies to help their children be responsible, effective and safer internet users. This session will also look at cyber bullying.
As parents, it is vital to have good, open communication with your children about the internet lives. Like all other aspects of their lives we need to talk to our children about the potential dangers that they may come across online as well as the many benefits they will find.
All parents of primary school children are welcome; this talk will take place 2nd February 2017.

Preparations for Sacraments: Congratulations to Rang 2 who received the Sacrament of Penance on 23rd January. Thanks to the boys from Rang 3-6 for singing in the school choir. This support is much appreciated. Rang 6 are preparing for their Confirmation which will take place on 9th March. The Ceremony of Light for Confirmation will take place on 1st February at 7.30 pm.

All classes displayed examples of their Science, Engineering & Maths Activities & Experiments. Many thanks to the pupils from Rang 6 who kindly helped out on the night.

Harold Boys’ Quiz Team
Two teams represented our school at the Credit Union Schools’ Quiz in St Kevin’s N.S, Sallynoggin on Friday 27 January 2017. Both teams put in a great effort and did the school proud. The senior team were particularly unlucky, missing out on a top three place by one point. Thanks to the members of both teams and to all the parents who attended on the night.
Senior Team: Cian Rainsford, Will Lambert, Milo Quinn and Stephen McDowell.
Junior Team: Cillian O’ Neill-Diamond, Riley King, Conor Brodrick and Cathal Power.

Green Schools: On a recent visit to Killiney Hill, sixth class learned about biodiversity in the local area. Mick Kingston told us about the diverse range of flora and fauna on the hill and its surroundings. We discovered how to tell Beech, Oak and Horse Chestnut trees apart even when they have shed their leaves. We also found out how the Christmas trees collected after Christmas are put to use in the woods. Dead plants can play their part in maintaining the biodiversity of the area by housing animals or plants and they can also be used to create eco-piles. We also got to admire the view from The Witch’s Hat. We’d like to thank Mick for his help on the day.
The Green Schools Committee for this year is:
Collie Breslin, Liam Kearns (2nd) Dónal Fitzgerald-Byrne, Dónal Moylan (3rd) Daniel Doyle, Lorcan Flavin (4th) Brian Jones, Christopher O’Toole (5th) Cormac Egan, Fionn Graham (6th) Mary Kingston (Parent) Mr Smith, Ms Buckley, Marvin Bautista (Staff)
Our school Green Code for Biodiversity is: “Don’t kill animals, don’t spread pollution, if you have a problem, biodiversity is the solution”

Sports News: Sixth class are currently swimming on Thursdays in Castlepark Swimming Pool. They will have their sponsored charity swim on February 16th.
Best of Luck!
