3rd Class Blog

Please come and visit our 3rd class blog. Here you can keep up to date on what’s going on in our class.

Welcome back to everyone! A special word of welcome to our new pupils in 2nd class and to Jonathan O Donnell Wall, Conor McGrane, Mauro Fouz Serrano, Noah O Regan, Alvaro Goizueta, Javier Calle Rodriguez.

Welcome – To Ms Carole Crowley who is a new permanent mainstream class teacher. Congratulations to Ms Hanmore who had a baby boy Bobby during the summer. Mr Antoin Bracken is taking her class during her maternity leave. Ms Emma Dwyer has been appointed as a full time Special Needs Assistant.

School starts at 9:10 a.m. Please do not send your son to school before the doors open at 8.50 a.m. as there is no supervision provided before this time. Also, a reminder to be punctual when collecting your son at 2.30 p.m.

Reminder: Please do not park in residents’ driveways on St. Patrick’s Road. Kindly meet your son across the road at 2.30 pm, as it is difficult to exit the school with the increase in our pupil numbers.

School Policies: The following policies were ratified at a recent meeting of the Board of Management: Child Protection, Anti Bullying, Health & Safety, Data Protection, and Critical Incidents.

Parents’ Association AGM will take place on 19th September at 7.30 p.m. Please support the meeting.

Book Rental Please note: your son has been allocated an identification number which is on all the books he will rent this year. These books must be returned to the school in June 2018. Parents/Guardians will be asked to purchase new books if those rented are lost or damaged.
Uniform Crests are available in the office. The cost of the crest is €6. Please ensure that your son wears his full uniform at all times and that all items of the uniform has his name clearly marked on them.

Office Hours: 9 am – 1 pm Monday to Friday. Please note that the office is unattended after 1 pm. PLEASE notify Ms Weafer of a new phone number or change of address

After School Activities: These activities begin September 7th. Monday – Drama. Tuesday – Guitar. Wednesday – Basketball (Rang 3 & 4). Wednesday – Gaelic (Rang 5 & 6). Thursday – Chess. Please send payments directly to these teachers and not to the school office.

Wellness Wednesday
With the aim of promoting wellbeing across the whole school community, we offer a ‘No Homework Day’ on ‘Wellness Wednesday’ the first Wednesday of every month. Instead of homework, the pupils engage in an activity that places particular emphasis on family interaction. This could be baking, going for a walk, board games or simply sitting down to enjoy a meal as a family. Cognisant of every family’s individual circumstances, this is an optional initiative. No homework shall be given throughout the school on ‘Wellness Wednesday’

Lunches – As several pupils have food allergies, we ask you not to include the following in your son’s lunch: Nutella, Snickers, peanut butter, fish or kiwi fruit. Please remind your son not to share his lunch with anyone.
Healthy Lunch reminder: No crisps, bars, sweets, gum or fizzy drinks. The HSE advises first break to be a ‘fruit break’. Friday can be a treat day e.g. a bar. This applies to school tours also.

Sports News – The senior football league will take place in Thomastown every Thursday from 14th September until the midterm for Fifth and Sixth class. Basketball coaching has begun for Second and Third class with Ed Randolf. Fourth class will begin swimming lessons on Thursday 21st September

Voluntary Contributions – We are hugely dependent on this contribution. Again, thanks to all who have paid recently. Contributions are welcome at any time.

Discover Primary Science & Maths – We are delighted to announce that Harold Boys’ National School has been awarded the Plaque of Science & Maths Excellence for the 11th year running. A huge congratulations to all of our pupils, and to our fantastic school Science team. Thank you to all who helped to make our project this year such a success.

Congratulations to Rang 2 who made their First Communion on 13th May. Well done to the choir for their fantastic singing. Special thanks to Ms. Hanmore for her work with the choir. Thanks also to the Parents’ Association for the splendid catering. A special word of gratitude to the parents of Rang 3 for helping out and especially to Sara Kelly for coordinating events. We enjoyed our Annual Choir Picnic on Killiney Hill on May 19th. Thanks again to the Parents’ Association for providing the goodies!

Green School
We have had a busy month of Green Schools activities! Firstly we had a tremendous achievement in finishing third overall in the Tidy Schools Awards for the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area and would like to thank the students, staff and everyone in our school community involved for their efforts in keeping our school so neat and tidy with special thanks to our caretaker, Marvin Bautista, for the fantastic work he does.
Our school featured in a segment on RTE News2Day for our Tidy Schools work and also our involvement in the Dalkey Gum Litter Parade. We marched with Castle Park School, Loreto Primary School and St Patrick’s National School to raise awareness about the problems that throwing chewing gum on the ground causes. Our boys produced some fantastic posters and slogans to highlight this issue and we finished the parade with a ‘Bin It’ throwing game at our school. Everybody enjoyed the day and it was great to collaborate with other schools in our area to highlight such an important issue. Thanks to Dean Eaton from DLR County Council for coordinating the parade and to Dalkey Tidy Towns and the local Gardaí for their help.
May 15th – 19th was Walk to School Week where students from our school made a huge effort to walk or park n’ stride to school. Our Green Schools committee surveyed classes during this week and will display the results on our Green Schools board. Well done to all who made a special effort that week.

Online Payments – We would encourage all parents to pay online. Simply email info@haroldboysdalkey.ie to activate payment. You can then use this to pay for your son’s journal, photocopying, Art etc. before he returns to school in August and when making payments throughout the year.

Soccerthon 2017 – This is the biggest (& last) fundraiser of the year. The Parents’ Association greatly appreciate your support. Please return all monies by Friday 23rd June.

Sports News – Santry Athletics: Well done to our Santry Athletics team who represented the school so well on Thursday 25th May. Congratulations to Sam Greaney & Daniel Doyle who made it through to their sprint finals.

The Séan Ó Gorman Plaque is ours once again! Congratulations to the 5th & 6th class team who won both of their matches against The Harold School, Glasthule. Well done also to the captains Cian Rainsford, Tim Saunders, Adam Greaney & Cormac Egan who did an excellent job.

Andre Fontes, Colm Heylin, Ben Kelly, Gavin Pantony and Sebastian Snyman represented Harold Boys’ NS in up to four individual events each, and two relays between them in the under 9 and under 10 age categories. The boys won gold in the boys under 10 (4 x 50 Freestyle relay) (Ben, Colm, Sebastian & Gavin), and silver in the boys under 10 (4 x 50 Medley relay) (Ben, Andre, Colm & Gavin). Green Schools News This month we continued our work on the biodiversity theme as all classes planted Irish tomatoes with Aoife from Windy Ridge Garden Centre. We learned about how to care for these plants and got to take them home. We searched the school gardens and bug hotel for different types of insects too. We also participated in the National Spring Clean with each class assigned to different areas of Dalkey. Many passers-by stopped to praise the efforts of our school which shows the impact this project has on the community. Next month, we will participate in another national campaign: National Walk to School Week. We would love to see all classes make a big effort to walk to school or park and stride for the week beginning Monday 15th May as walking to school has so many benefits for the environment and for our own health and wellbeing.

Speech & Drama Exams: The Irish Board of Speech & Drama examiner complimented all pupils on the high standard this year. Congratulation to medal winners Gavin Pantony, Ross Byrne & Conor Brodrick. Well done to Kevin Roche, Colm Heylin, Turloch Egan Manson, Niccolo Mc Namara, Ben Kelly, Antoin Siejko, Dylan Owens, Donal Moylan, Conor Westbrook, Tom Hogan, Daniel Doyle, Milo Quinn, Rory O’Mahony, and Jack O’Doherty who all received Distinction.
